Sith Lord Druggie

Knights of the Old Republic. Well I know the sequel is out, but I believe that RPGs never lose their gaming value. =p

Anyway, an interesting thing I discovered is that combat drugs play a key role in this game, amusingly enough. Before fighting bad Jedi (or anyone for that matter) it makes a great deal of sense to jack up on, say, hyper adrenal strength stimulants, and echani battle stimulant drugs. Then you absolutely own any enemy you come across, even boss battles.

Yeah, the way of the Jedi is through doing drugs. =p

I guess this is the equivalent of my Neverwinter Nights characters drinking potion of Bull Strength and Owls Wisdom before fighting. Since this game IS made by Bioware.

Oh BTW... the best and most memorable droid character I have seen ever, appears in this game - HK-47, a psychotic protocol / assasination droid. You pick him up at a secondhand droids dealer on Tatooine. The voice acting is marvellous and his dialog is side achingly funny. Damn I wish I could show you guys =p His dialog is the only one in the game I don't skip past (ie actually listen to the voice actor speak all the lines instead of just reading the text and moving on)

Pretty Graphics... But where is the game?

Ground Control 2 is the only game so far that runs FSAA (full screen anti aliasing) without choking or slowing down. FSAA is basically rendering each frame twice and averaging across both frames allowing it to perform a visual trick that makes our eyes see diagonal lines as smooth rather than jagged.

Every other game that tries FSAA becomes unplayably choppy.

Too bad about the actual game itself : not very interesting to play, and the modelling and texturing of the UNITS themselves in the game is quite uninspiring... only the backgrounds and scenery is nice. Too bad, since there are several very unique innovations to strategy gaming here introduced by Massive Entertainment : different armour penetration profiles based on which side of the tank is hit by enemy fire, the concept of "pinning", concept of stealth and perception ranges. This feels far more like a strategy wargame than anything I have played before.

Damage taken based on direction of enemy fire makes sense : most vehicle armour is placed on the front. Even for infantry : when they take cover to fire back at the enemy, they position themselves in such a way that terrain features block lines of fire from the front.

Pinning : units under fire take a penalty to their attack accuracy and movement rate. Makes sense : for infantry they have to stay in cover, and even tanks crew to some extent perform worse under pressure.

Stealth and Perception : All units have a stealth rating which measures how hard it is to detect : a tank has much lower stealth than a footsoldier, while a sniper equipped in camo gear and lying perfectly skill in a forest has a very high stealth rating. All units can be detected if they are close enough, just depending on their stealth rating (modifed by environmental factors : direction of sun, cover, weather) and the perception rating of the detecting unit (expect that tanks have poor perception compared to a footsoldier, since you can't see as much and hear anything over the noise of the engines or insulated inside crew compartment, unless the tank is equiped with sensory gear).

Other neat features which weren't actually innovations : direct line of sight (LOS) engine allows for you to hide units within terrain features, like putting some soldiers in a trench. No one outside can see in, but you can't see out either : that's why you have that sniper lying in wait in the bushes out there.

All this serves to focus the game more on battle tactics : the need to flank an opponent (infantry anti tank rockets ineffective against tank front armour, must seek side / rear firing angle).. the need for spotters, having high visual range / high perception / high stealth rating units. The need for pinning weapons.

An interesting concept they introduced which isn't really relevant to most strategy games is shielding. Everyone has access to some unit with a mobile shield projector, which protects a spherical area around it from missiles and slow moving projectile attacks, like artillery and mortars. Two ways to get around shields : use weapons which ignore shields (like chemical weapons or standard projectile weapons) or overload them (they can only block a certain number of impacts per second). On the other hand the defender can overlap shields to give increased protection to the units inside.

It's an interesting game itself to get around the shielding : you can try artillery bombardment around the edges of the shield, hoping some energy blastback will injure the units inside... or you can time a massive artillery barrage with a missile barrage and an orbital bombardment and hope some will get through and hit enough shield projector units that subsequent attacks can get through.

Thursday

DDR anime mixes =p

Thanks to Ken I am enjoying the full collection of DDR Anime remixes 1 through 6. Haha, such leet songs, luckily I'm a guitar and drums fan and don't mind music with lots of synth.

Not having my DDR pad (leaving it at home) means I have to play with the arrow keys on my keyboard, which looks like it sucks but it's more fun than it looks.

Ramping up the difficulty and using your fingers means the bottleneck is not how fast you can move your feet but how fast your brain and eyes can process the moves. It's an entrancing game, especially with fast upbeat songs that you like. You're interacting with the music, and you can even think of it like you're playing the music (like a piano) rather than just passively listening to it.

Tuesday

Shopping! Shopping! Shopping!

If you're interested in what I bought in China, I posted up my haul on Purple Mascara, a shopper's community. Yes I confess to frequenting it and envying all the girls their stuff.

Not today though!

Take a look!

Sunday

Star Wars Episode 3.

Congrats to George Lucas : this film is actually watchable compared to the first two which had me cringing all the way.

I expected this movie to open with a bang and I wasn't disappointed : a big space battle with cap ships duking it out amidst a swarm of starfighters. I guess there wasn't enough budget in Episodes 4/5/6 for much of that : these shots look gorgeously detailed. (see picture). Then a daring mission by two jedi (of course Obi Wan and Anakin) to break into the command ship and rescue Palpatine, fighting with Darth Sidious and General Grievious along the way. And R2 gets to kick some ass as well, really love that droid. =p And guess what, the action never really stops : one of the best action shows I've seen in a long time. Well on the other hand the actions scenes could be less tightly spaced, and some scenes were pretty rushed, especially the crucial point where Anakin turns to the Dark Side... that was a pretty fast decision there eh?

Yet I will have to resign myself to the fact that Anakin X Padme scenes will always suck. The way Anakin turned to the Dark Side was pretty believable, (believe it or not), the only flaw in the whole thing was the unconvincing relationship between Anakin and Padme, but that's a flaw in the acting rather than flaw in the storyline.

Pretty violent show : lots of people being chopped up by lightsabres, I was a bit queasy by the end myself =p

Strange things I noticed.

Kashykk : what's up with that, when various books have described Kashykk as a planet with trees kilometers tall and wookies as arboreal and the planetary surface absolutely full of deadly lifeforms (hence why wookies are arboreal) and huge 'cloud cities' strung across the huge trees. Well perhaps I was mistaken...

Obi Wan owning Anakin at the end : with some super saiyan lightsabre attack and then, leaving him to die in such a pitiful manner. I wouldn't leave even my worst enemies in that kind of pain and condition, at least if they're going to die I would finish them off on humanitarian grounds. This from the Jedi Master who claims "I love you like my brother".

Boo Hoo

UPDATE! Herbie the Computer is HOME! Sadly mindwiped... *sighs*

My computer, Herbie, faithful and beloved....

is brain dead.

It is now in the shop getting a new brain with more memory (80GB instead of 20GB). I wanted 40GB, but they were out and waiting is out of the question.

So Herbie will have his memory wiped, because they really do charge too much to TRY and retrieve data from his old brain. *sighs* Darn.

Until tomorrow evening then, I shall be using my bro's laptop whenever he so permitteth me. Thank God I was relatively nice to him about using MY computer when he was laptopless.

Right now I dread reinstalling....oh... EVERYTHING. >_<

I scream, you scream, we scream for Ice cream!

This is a hilarious writeup.

The Amateur Gourmet attempts to seduce you into making and eating the Barefoot Contessa's caramel chocolate pecan ice cream.

And you know what? It WORKED

Come to think of it. I too have an ice cream craving now... hmm...

Random Foosball Insight

Just jotting something down before I forget it.

In some games like Foosball you need a repertoire of attack moves and passes which you can pull out at will. Whenever you play against an unknown opponent you have to pull out the moves one by one to probe their defenses, seeing how adaptable they are and whether they are set in a particular pattern of defense which makes them vulnerable or resistant to certain attacks. Previously I was an advocate of just taking your "best" move and repeatedly using it against the opponent.

Most people look at games as an interaction with the game environment, as a problem to be solved : for example in chess, they might go only so far as looking at the pieces on the board and see it as a problem to be solved, how shall I destroy this formation and this defense. In foosball they might go, oh, this man and this man is blocking these areas and how shall I get past that, but really the CORRECT way to think about it is to go beyond that and directly interact with the intelligence behind the game environment, knowing that the actions of the opponent are not factors you merely react to, but something that you can predict and eventually influence.

Magic Card Prerelease Party !!!

Well, Spellkeeper paid my entry fee for the Saviours of Kamigawa prerelease. (and he gets to keep all the cards) I pulled a decent selection of cards and but could only make a pretty lousy deck (I'm actually pretty bad at this) and well, the Kumano (see picture) pulled me through most of the games.

Still, I won 6 out of a possible 8 booster packs: hehe so based on my past three outings I am slightly above the average. 75th percentile? =p

The Kelly Bag

This is SO FUNNY.

While shopping in China I found and bought an utterly classy looking bag for a mere RM75. I knew when I saw it that I had seen it somewhere before, that it was fabulously expensive and very much in haute couture fashion at the moment.

Guess what. I HAVE seen it before, it's the famous HERMES KELLY BAG worth anywhere from USD$4000 - USD$10,000 (if it were real that is).

China, bless their little hearts, were selling the bag in ALL colours and sizes. I was drawn to the burgandy in a practical slightly large size.... and I swear, it's almost the exact replica of the bag in the movie Le Divorce (where I saw it before and where it was featured prominently). Mom recognised it on sight and burst out laughing.

*grins* I have taste!

And now I shall shamelessly use it, glorying in my ciplak glamour.

Back from China

With ulcers, pimples, a general all-over muscular ache and fatigue.

But yes, I'm home safely with a bundle of loot and haven't been sold off by dad. ^_^

May blog about it later on with pics.

Thursday

Airplane food.

Back in Melbourne right now.

Most people call me weird but I have really enjoyed eating the dinners provided in the airplanes on the last few trips. Perhaps it's not so much the food that is the problem but rather the claustrophobia / cramped conditions / general feeling of fed-up-ness that makes the food seem like it sucks. I have the feeling the food isn't all that BAD as it's made out to be.

Flying back to Malaysia : got fragrant coconut rice with some spice that I keep forgetting the name of : with thai chilli sauce chicken. Getting something like that steaming hot ranks among the more enjoyable things I get to eat. =p

Flying back to Melbourne : starter was a spicy squid salad, and then main was a nicely done beef rib dish (western) with some carrots, apples and various other green things. The desert was inedible though so I didn't even try (some chocolate cake with nuts).

Monday

Super Street Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo

(btw no pictures when i'm home in malaysia because i don't have hello installed)

Finally got my hands on a copy of this game.

This game got critical acclaim from gamers and game designers around the world because it is still one of the few games with a reversed slippery slope.

The slippery slope concept in games is the idea that any mistake you make makes you slip down the slope and makes it harder and harder to "come back" and win.

For example in Chess : making a blunder and losing a knight puts you at a further disadvantage - you are less able to defend your remaining pieces, and less able to attack the stronger enemy formations, making it even more likely that you will lose another piece, and it becomes a self reinforcing downward spiral.

Even games like Tennis or Ping Pong have a slippery slope : a player trailing in points is less able to make risky moves and is forced into more conservative play, and in competetive games you have to take risks sometimes to win points.

Still, games with a very slippery slope are flawed in this way : the first person to make a mistake is likelier to lose. While playing flawlessly is no doubt a good characterisitc it makes for a more boring game where comebacks for underdogs are rare, and where the games become a forgone conclusion in the first half of the match.

Games with a reversed slippery slope seem to make no sense at first glance. In trying to win the game you are putting yourself in a losing position? Or by deliberately "losing" in the beginning you are actually setting yourself up to win in the long run?

Super Street Puzzle Fighter is this oddity. If you want to find out how it works I suggest you try to get a copy of it.

Friends...

From a stranger...
to an acquaintance...
to a friend.
You presented the best memories
and as God adds years to my life,
you added life to my years.

The person who sent me this probably doesn't read my blog. But if you do, I want you to know I haven't forgotten. = )

Dawn of War Patch 1.3

Wohoo. Released today. Their idea of "balance" is kind of silly sometimes but the new features they included are just wow. This patch is possibly more anticipated than most official game expansions are.

Most notable is their support of the "arranged team" automatch function, and implementation of observer mode. Performance improvements by tweaking and revamping code, and many bug fixes. This is actually considered a halfway point to the expansion called Winter Assault to be released at the end of this year. Now finally, this game feels as polished and complete as Warcraft 3, which is the benchmark against which all RTS games are measured.

Wahh... want o play... except that download is so large. They're distributing the file through bit torrent... finally must go install that thing.

USB Digital Drum Kit

1come is a Taiwan company selling a USB digital drum kit. Pacific Digital also selling a USB digital drum kit... that looks suspiciously similar. In fact... it's the same thing. Gets me wondering...

Well, proof that american marketing is SO SO much better than what Taiwan does. I don't think anyone in the world except Asia would buy a drum kit from a company calling itself 1come.

Wednesday

Random happenings.

I don't miss Malaysian food as much as I thought I would, in fact, not anywhere near as much as OTHER people think I should. It's like commiting treason or something. =p But yeah I had the best Asam Laksa and Ais Kacang I've tasted for a loooong time. In a suffocatingly hot and smoky underground hawker center.

The first thing I noticed when I touched down in Malaysia was... the Malays. Working at the McDonalds where I tried to get a packet of chips. If you're from Malaysia you'll know what I'm talking about. About the level of service you get. The more exposed you are to other cultures I guess the more chance there is for you to cement in racial stereotypes. Well like it or not this is the country we live in.

Petrol prices here rise another 10 cents to much uproar and consternation among the public. Petrol in Malaysiai is subsidized : the general idea is that rich people pay (higher proportion) taxes to government which the government uses part of it to subsidize petrol, which benefits all members of society... achieving income redistribution.

On the other hand it's more rational for the government to apply a high tax on petrol as a way of paying for road maintanence. Eh. Can't be bothered to go into the economics of it.

Introducing further subsidies and taxes this way distorts the system. At the moment the government pays for road building and maintanence through car road tax and general income tax. The idea is generally that the people who use a service should be the ones to pay for it. But right now, the people who use roads the most (and create jams and force the government to build multi million dollar flyovers and intersections and highways) are being SUBSIDIZED by the government (in terms of fuel subsidies) rather than being TAXED and being made to pay for what they use. In other words, highways and other road infrastructure looks like they're being paid out of the pockets of people who don't drive??? At least that's what it looks like to me.

The Dawn of War patch 1.3 was supposed to be released this week Tuesday... but... omg... I forgot their headquarters is located in Canada which is possibly the slowest part of the world to REACH Tuesday. Which probably means we'll probably get the patch on Wednesday. Then I have to update my website and reinstate the subdomain.

Apparently lots of people "missed" my DoW site when it went offline. Wah. Ego!!!

Uh... my friend online messages me and says my beer tasted good. Someone's raiding my fridge while I'm away. -_-

Saturday

Nooo....

Playing DOTA... and then halfway the electricity supply to my house cuts out for a second and comes back, forcing the computer into a reboot... NOOO... the end of my game >_<

And it was my first time doing so well with that particular hero too. Magnus (the magnataur) with the following gear at level 19 : Travel Boots, Battlefury, Satanic, Hyperstone. Mmm... 350 physical damage with 85% area splash.

Curse the unreliability of Malaysian power supply... have to go back to Australia again to get proper electricty and internet connection.

Tuesday

How much does streamyx suck -_-

I am connected for perhaps 1 minute out of every 10. Just enough time to blog this I think. Argh. Want my Australian broadband again.
